ABOUT DREAMS

Dreams have fascinated philosophers for thousands of years, but only recently have dreams been subjected to research and concentrated scientific study. Chances are that you’ve often found yourself puzzling over the content of a dream, or perhaps you’ve wondered why you dream at all, most people will look on line or buy and book to find an answer to their dream.

But a good psychic can anayalize it for you.

EVERYBODY DREAMS:

Men, Women, babies even blind people dream but blind peoples dreams mainly include information from the other senses such as sound, touch, taste, hearing and smell.  People who claim not to dream do they just don’t remember them.   People have several dreams per night each last anything from 5 to 20 minutes.   According to theory and research we do not remember most dreams due to the changes in the brain that occur during sleep and those changes do not support the information processing and storage needed for memory formation to take place.  Brain scans of sleeping individuals have shown that the frontal lobes the key area that plays a role in memory formation are inactive during REM Sleep the stage in which dreaming occurs.

WHAT IS A DREAM?

A dream can include images, thoughts and emotions that are experienced during sleep. Dreams can be extraordinarily vivid or very vague; filled with joyful emotions or frightening imagery; focused and understandable or unclear and confusing.

People spend approximately 6 years of their life span dreaming. 80% if individuals dream in colour and 20% dream in black and white.  Research shows that the colours are normally soft pastel colours. Dreams reveal many emotions including joy, happiness, and fear.  The most common experience in dreams was aniety, and negative emotions in general were much more common that positive ones. REM sleep, is the stage of sleep during which dreaming occurs and is charaterized by voluntary paralysis of the muscles it prevents you from acting out dreams while asleep because motor neurons are not stimulated your body does not move. While dreams are often infuenced by our personal experiences, researchers have found that certain themes are very common across different cultures. For example people from all over the world frequently dream about being chased, being attacked or failing.

WHY DO WE DREAM?

Many theories have been proposed, no single consensus has emerged.  Researchers do not yet understand the purpose of dreams however it is important to consider science is still unravelling the exact purpose and function of sleep itself.

So researchers suggest that dreams have no real purpose but others believe that dreaming is essential to mental, emotional and physical well being.  The function of a dream is to be weaving new material into the memory system in a way that both reduces emotional arousal and is adaptive in helping us cope with further trauma or stressful events.

DREAM THEORIES:

Psychoanalytic perspective, Sigmund Freud’s theory of dreams suggested that dreams were a representation of unconscious desires, thoughts and motivations.  Freud’s theory is dreams are a representation of unconscious desires, thoughts, motivations and according to psychoanalytic view of the personality, people can be driven by aggressive and sexual instints that are repressed from conscious awareness, while these thoughts are not consciously expressed, freud suggested that they find their way into our awareness via dreams.  Freud wrote that dreams are … disguised fulfilments of repressed wishes.  He also described to components of dreams manifest content and latent content.  Manifest content is made up of the actual images, thoughts and content contained within the dream, while the latent content represents the hidden psychcological meaning of the dream.
Freud’s theory contributed to the popularity of dream interpretation, which remains popular today.

OTHER DREAM THEORIES:

  1. One theory suggests that dreams are the result of our brains trying to interpret external stimuli during sleep.

  2. Another theory uses a computer metaphor to account for dreams, according to this theory, dreams serve to clean up clutter from the mind much like and clean up operation on a computer, refreashing the mind for the next day.

  3. Yet another model proposes that dreams function as a form of psychotherapy , In this theory, the dreamer is able to make connections between different thoughts and emotions in a safe environment.

  4. A contemporary model of dreaming combines some elements of various theories.  The activation of the brian creates loose connections between thoughts and ideas, which are the guided by the emotions of the dreamer.
